Leigh Saunders

Growing up in a military family allowed me to see a fair bit of the world — and required me to learn to adapt to different cultures and customs every time we moved. Then I read (or heard?) the phrase “…the things are also people…” in a SF story.

Even though I travel a lot less with my own family, the wanderlust has never completely gone away — or the curiosity about cultures and customs strange and wonderful, and I’ve written about people (or things that are also people) dealing with unusual cultural situations ever since… and you can see where that’s gotten me!

A “Memoirs of a Synth” short story

For the genetically engineered Synth, “living” means always staying one step ahead of the bounty hunters. Available on Kindle, Nook, and Smashwords. $0.99

Reader Review

“…I was immediately engaged by the other-world setting and the characters. So much “hard” SF leaves me blurry-eyed as one unfamiliar thing piles on top of another, but Saunders makes her far-future worlds as real and accessible as a book set in the here and now, never letting the action lag as Brianna faces hard choices that require all of her considerable resources to survive. I hope we’ll see more of both Brianna and the worlds she inhabits in the future. Five Stars.” (posted on Amazon by Susan J. Hidley)

Marriage of Convenience, a novelette by Leigh SaundersMarriage of Convenience

a novelette

An unexpected demand by the powerful Rhysa throws fragile treaty negotiations into a turmoil. Tasked with brokering an interspecies marriage of alliance between humans and Rhysians, Earth’s negotiation team finds themselves caught in an interstellar re-enactment of Beauty and the Beast – one demanding personal sacrifices to ensure peace, and where no one will be magically transformed in the end.

Available on Kindle, Nook, and Smashwords.  $2.99

Reader Review

“…a fascinating look at the collision of two very different cultures. …Saunders makes the “Beauty and the Beast” scenario surprisingly plausible in the science fictional setting. Not only does the author show us an alien civilization, but she also looks at an extrapolated human culture much different than ours–and then explores how these changes would effect the real people living in these societies. This is rich fare–and well worth the read.  Five Stars.” (posted on Amazon by Steven Mohan, Jr.)
